Reviews, schema, and local SEO — explained plainly
Practical guides on how Google reviews work, what they do and do not do for search, and how to display them so they change a visitor's mind. Written for local business owners and the freelancers who build their sites.
Last reviewed by the Reviews Widget product team.
The short version: reviews on your Google Business Profile move local rankings, and reviews on your website move conversion. Both matter, for different reasons — and no on-site embed earns star snippets in search, whatever a vendor tells you.

Frequently asked questions
Do embedded reviews improve my Google rankings?+
Indirectly. They add fresh, customer-worded content and improve engagement, but they do not earn star rich results — Google treats reviews about your own business on your own site as self-serving and ineligible. The signals that move the local pack live on your Google Business Profile.
Where should I start if I am new to all this?+
Read what a Google reviews widget is, then how Google ranks local businesses. Between them they cover the mechanics of displaying reviews and the factors that actually decide whether you appear in local results.
How many Google reviews do I need?+
Roughly ten before the average carries weight with buyers, and a steady flow after that. Recency matters more than total volume past the first few dozen, because a profile with no recent reviews reads as a business that has gone quiet.
Is it legal to display Google reviews on my own website?+
Yes, provided they are shown accurately and attributed to their source. Displaying genuine platform-hosted reviews with a link back to the original is standard practice. Writing or incentivising reviews is what breaches consumer law.
What is the single highest-value thing I can do with reviews?+
Reply to all of them, quickly, including the critical ones. Owner responses are the cheapest trust signal available, they are encouraged by Google, and they are read by every prospective customer who scrolls past the star average.
