How to make a QR code
Four short steps and about a minute. The code regenerates live as you type, so you can see exactly how each change looks before you download anything.
1. Choose the type
URL, text, WiFi, vCard, email, SMS or phone — whatever should happen when someone scans.
2. Enter your details
Fill in the fields. The preview updates instantly with every keystroke.
3. Style it
Set brand colours, size, quiet zone, rounded dots and an optional centre logo.
4. Download and test
Grab the PNG for screens or the SVG for print, then scan it with two phones before it goes live.
QR code types and what they are for
| Type | What happens when it is scanned |
|---|---|
| Website URL | Sends the scanner straight to any page — your homepage, a booking form, a menu or a review link. |
| Plain text | Shows a short message, serial number or instruction on the phone screen without opening a browser. |
| WiFi | Joins the network automatically. Perfect for cafes, clinics, salons, offices and holiday rentals. |
| vCard | Saves your name, business, phone, email and website into the scanner's contacts in one tap. |
| Opens a new email addressed to you, with the subject and body already filled in. | |
| SMS | Opens a text message to your number with a pre-written message — handy for enquiries and bookings. |
| Phone | Starts a call to your business number, so nobody has to copy digits off a sign. |
Printing and scan-reliability tips
Most QR codes that fail in the wild fail for the same handful of reasons. Keep to these and yours will scan first time, every time.
- · Size it for the distance. Aim for a width of roughly one tenth of the scanning distance — about 2–3 cm on a receipt, 5 cm on a poster, 30 cm+ on a shopfront.
- · Keep the contrast strong. Dark dots on a light background. Pale or inverted codes are the number one cause of failed scans.
- · Leave the quiet zone. The blank border around the pattern is part of the code — do not crop it or run text into it.
- · Use SVG for print. Vector stays razor-sharp at any size; a 256 px PNG blown up to A3 will not scan.
- · Raise error correction if you add a logo. This tool does it for you, but keep the logo under about a fifth of the width.
- · Add a call to action. “Scan to join our WiFi” or “Scan to leave a review” roughly doubles scan rates versus a bare code.
- · Always test before you print. Two different phones, in the light you will actually use it in.
Turn a QR code into more customer reviews
A scan-to-review QR code on your counter, receipt or invoice is one of the cheapest ways to grow your Google rating. Build your direct review link with the Google review link generator, paste it into the URL tab above, add your brand colours and print it. Then embed those Google reviews on your website so new visitors see them, add star rich snippets to your search results, or compare plans and pricing.
Frequently asked questions
How do I generate a QR code?+
Pick the type of QR code you need, fill in the fields, and the code appears instantly. Adjust the colours, size and quiet zone if you like, then download it as a PNG for screens or an SVG for print. There is no sign-up and no limit on how many you create.
Is this QR code generator really free?+
Yes. Every type, every download and every styling option is free, with no account, no watermark and no expiry. The codes are generated in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to us or stored anywhere.
Do QR codes expire?+
Static QR codes like the ones this tool creates never expire. The data is encoded directly in the pattern, so the code keeps working forever as long as the destination it points at — your website, phone number or WiFi password — is still valid.
Can I use these QR codes commercially?+
Yes. QR code is an open, patent-free standard, so you can print the codes on packaging, signage, menus, business cards, vehicles and advertising without paying a licence fee to anyone, including us.
How do I make a WiFi QR code?+
Choose the WiFi tab, enter your network name exactly as it appears on the device, select the security type (WPA/WPA2/WPA3 for most modern routers) and type the password. Guests scan the code with their camera and join without typing anything — ideal for cafes, salons and holiday rentals.
Can I put my logo in the middle of a QR code?+
Yes. Upload a logo and it is drawn in the centre on a clean plate. Error correction is automatically raised to High so the code still scans with part of the pattern covered. Keep the logo small and always test the printed code with a couple of phones.
What size should a printed QR code be?+
A good rule of thumb is a width of about one tenth of the scanning distance. That means roughly 2–3 cm for a menu or receipt, 5 cm for a poster read at half a metre, and 30 cm or more for a shopfront window or vehicle. Download the SVG for print so it stays sharp at any size.
Can I make a QR code that collects Google reviews?+
Yes. Use our Google review link generator to find your business and build a direct write-a-review link, then paste that link into the URL tab here to style your own scan-to-review QR code with your brand colours and logo.
