Those gold stars only appear when Google finds valid review schema (AggregateRating markup) on the page. Generate yours with the review schema generator, then check it with the schema tester — both linked below.
How star rich snippets work
Google does not read the reviews on your page like a human does. It looks for structured data — a small block of JSON-LD markup that states your average rating and review count in a standard format. When the markup is valid and matches what is visible on the page, Google can show gold stars, your rating and your review count directly in the search result. Results with stars consistently earn a higher click-through rate than plain blue links.
From preview to live stars in three steps
1. Generate the markup
Use the review schema generator to create valid AggregateRating JSON-LD with your real numbers.
2. Test it
Paste it into the review schema tester to confirm it parses and is eligible for rich results.
3. Publish and wait
Add the markup to your page and let Google recrawl it. Stars typically appear within days to a few weeks.
The easy way: let the widget add the schema
If you display your Google reviews with our widget, valid review schema is included automatically — no markup to generate, paste or maintain, and the numbers stay in sync as new reviews arrive. Read how star rich snippets work with the widget, or get the embed code for your platform.
Frequently asked questions
Why do some Google results show gold stars?+
Gold stars appear when Google finds valid review structured data — AggregateRating markup in JSON-LD — on the page. Google reads the rating value and review count from that markup and renders them as stars under the result. Without the markup, no stars, no matter how good your reviews are.
Is this what my actual Google result will look like?+
It is a close approximation of how rich results render on desktop and mobile, but Google decides whether to show stars for any given page and query. Valid markup makes you eligible; it does not guarantee display. Use the preview to sanity-check your numbers, then validate the real markup with the schema tester.
What rating and review count should I use?+
Use the honest, current figures from your Google Business Profile or the reviews shown on the page. Google's guidelines require the markup to reflect reviews genuinely collected about the business, and inflated numbers can cost you the rich result entirely.
Does review schema work for any business?+
It works for local businesses, products, services and more, but Google does not show stars for every schema type — LocalBusiness and Product are the most reliably displayed. Self-serving reviews on your own homepage are allowed for LocalBusiness, which is exactly what this preview models.
How do I add the stars to my real search result?+
Generate valid AggregateRating JSON-LD with the review schema generator, paste it into your page, then confirm it parses with the schema tester. If you use our review widget, the markup is added for you automatically.
